獨立鋰電池在美國境內被禁止作為航空貨物運輸。2016年2月，國際民用航空組織（ICAO）——聯合國負責規範國際航空器危險品運輸的機構——頒布禁令，禁止在所有航空器上以貨物形式運輸獨立鋰離子電池（UN3480）。
2019年3月的PHMSA IFR將美國鋰離子電池運輸法規與ICAO的規定調和一致，並對地面運輸增加額外要求，以確保沒有鋰離子電池違反規定被裝載上航空器。
