Long fur on your dog can break the Barkless Pro BP-504's sensor contact. Learn when the extender sensor cap is needed and how to fit it level with longer contact points.

Quick answer

Fit the Barkless Pro extender sensor cap whenever you switch the BP-504 to longer contact points for a long-haired dog. It keeps the middle sensor post level with those points so the collar can still detect barks reliably. If your dog has short fur and the standard contact points already sit against the skin, you do not need it.

Why the middle sensor post matters more than the contact points

The BP-504 relies on its middle sensor post to pick up the vibration of a bark. The outer contact points deliver the correction. When you lengthen the contact points for a thick coat, the sensor post can end up recessed behind them, so it no longer touches the skin firmly. The extender cap raises that middle post to match the new point length.

This is a fit problem, not a training problem. If the collar seems inconsistent only after you changed to longer points, check the sensor post height before adjusting anything else.

When a longer cap is the wrong fix

Do not add the extender cap just because the collar feels loose. A loose strap, a receiver placed too high on the neck, or a dog that has learned to brace can all cause missed detection. Tighten and reposition the collar first, following the standard fit guidance for e-collars.

Also skip the cap if your dog has short fur and the original contact points already rest evenly against the skin. Adding height there can press the sensor post too firmly into the neck and make the collar uncomfortable without improving detection.

Diagnose the sensor cap fit

  • Symptom: the collar misses barks or corrects inconsistently after you changed contact points: Look at the middle sensor post from the side. If it sits shorter than the surrounding contact points, the extender cap is missing or not seated. Fit the extender cap over the sensor post so its top is level with the tips of the longer contact points. Level height is the goal, not maximum height.
  • Symptom: the collar works but the receiver looks uneven against the neck: Remove the cap, check that it is not cross-threaded, and refit it straight. Then place the receiver on the neck and confirm all points, including the sensor post, touch the skin evenly before tightening the strap. If one point presses harder than the others, stop and refit rather than tightening more.
  • Symptom: you are unsure whether you need the cap at all: Use it only when the BP-504 is fitted with longer contact points for a long-haired dog. With standard points on a short-coated dog, leave it off. If the collar still misses barks after correct fitting, stop adding height and review strap tension, receiver position, or contact-point length instead. Choose a different fix when fit is already correct.
