Fristående litiumbatterier är förbjudna som last vid flygtransport inom USA. I februari 2016 införde International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) – FN-organet som reglerar transport av farligt gods på internationella flygplan – ett förbud mot att transportera fristående litiumjonbatterier (UN3480) som last på alla flygplan.
PHMSA IFR från mars 2019 harmoniserade USA:s transportregler för litiumjonbatterier med ICAO:s regler, tillsammans med ytterligare krav för marktransporter för att säkerställa att inga litiumjonbatterier lastades på flygplan i strid med reglerna.
