I februar 2016 innførte International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO)—FNs organisasjon som regulerer transport av farlig gods om bord på internasjonale fly—et forbud mot å transportere enkeltstående litium-ion-batterier (UN3480) som last på alle fly.
PHMSA IFR fra mars 2019 harmoniserte USAs transportforskrifter for litium-ion-batterier med ICAOs, sammen med ekstra krav for bakketransport for å sikre at ingen litium-ion-batterier ble lastet på fly i strid med forskriftene.
