Les batteries au lithium autonomes sont interdites comme fret lors du transport aérien aux États-Unis. En février 2016, l'Organisation de l'aviation civile internationale (OACI)—l'agence des Nations Unies qui réglemente le transport des marchandises dangereuses à bord des aéronefs internationaux—a promulgué une interdiction de transporter des batteries lithium-ion autonomes (UN3480) comme fret à bord de tous les aéronefs.
L'IFR de mars 2019 de la PHMSA a harmonisé les réglementations américaines sur le transport des batteries lithium-ion avec celles de l'OACI, avec des exigences supplémentaires pour les expéditions terrestres afin de garantir qu'aucune batterie lithium-ion ne soit chargée à bord des aéronefs contrairement aux réglementations.
