Irralliset litiumakut ovat kiellettyjä lentorahtina Yhdysvalloissa. Helmikuussa 2016 Kansainvälinen siviili-ilmailujärjestö (ICAO) – Yhdistyneiden kansakuntien virasto, joka sääntelee vaarallisten aineiden kuljetusta kansainvälisissä lentokoneissa – asetti kiellon kuljettaa irrallisia litiumioniakkuja (UN3480) rahtina kaikissa lentokoneissa.
Maaliskuun 2019 PHMSA IFR -asetus yhdenmukaisti Yhdysvaltojen litiumioniakkujen kuljetusmääräykset ICAO:n sääntöjen kanssa sekä lisäsi vaatimuksia maakuljetuksille varmistaakseen, ettei litiumioniakkuja lastattu lentokoneisiin määräysten vastaisesti.
