Standalone lithiumbatterier er forbudt som last ved lufttransport i USA. I februar 2016 indførte Den Internationale Civile Luftfartsorganisation (ICAO) – FN-agenturet, der regulerer transport af farligt gods om bord på internationale fly – et forbud mod at transportere standalone lithium-ion-batterier (UN3480) som last på alle fly.
PHMSA IFR fra marts 2019 harmoniserede de amerikanske regler for transport af lithium-ion-batterier med ICAO's regler, samtidig med ekstra krav til jordtransport for at sikre, at ingen lithium-ion-batterier blev lastet på fly i strid med reglerne.
